Statement of Purpose
The AIA Mississippi Design Awards Program seeks to encourage excellence and elevate the quality of architecture by recognizing and honoring works of distinction by its members and bring to public attention outstanding examples of architecture and design.
Eligibility
The AIA Mississippi Design Awards Program is open to any completed architectural project or unbuilt project completed between January 2003 and May 2009, which has been produced by, or in collaboration with, any member of the AIA Mississippi. Firms and individuals are encouraged to submit previously submitted non-winning projects, or projects which have won awards in other venues.
Submission Requirements
A Project Title and Project Statement of up to 300 words is required for each entry. The Project Statement should include the architect’s intent or concept and convey salient information about the project addressing what the architect sees as meritorious from a design stand point.
How to Enter
There are three steps to the entry process:
- Submit a completed electronic registration form via email to Joe Blake at joe@aiamississippi.org and $125.00 entry fee for each project by May 29, 2009. Forms and entry fees may also be mailed to AIA Mississippi, 509 East Capitol Street, Jackson, MS 39201, or faxed to 601-354-6481 to be received by the above date.
- Upon receipt of the registration form and fees an entry number will be e-mailed to the contact person. Click here to download the PowerPoint template (required with your submission).
- The submission will be in two formats, PowerPoint and Presentation Board. Both must be received by May 29, 09.
Guidelines
- Both formats will facilitate a submission in which all images and text contribute to supporting the Project Statement.
- Each image should have a purpose as it relates to the larger idea.
- Images should work to support the Project Statement and help explain the project to the jurors.
- Be sure to label plans clearly, include a site plan with north arrow, and establish the context of the project.
- “Before” images are especially important in the renovation/restoration category.
- Images can be layered within any given PowerPoint slide.
Formats
Send two completed PowerPoint presentations on a CD or electronic submission to jwest@caad.msstate.edu.
One of the PowerPoint Presentations must include a firm title slide at the beginning of the project submission with the names of all firms/consultants. This PowerPoint presentation will be used at the Awards Banquet for all winning entries. The other PowerPoint will be used for the design jury process. A maximum of twelve (12) slides are allowed per project. Short explanatory notes may be included in the PowerPoint image to help communicate the intent to the jury members. The template provides for these notes. Multiple project submissions may be entered on one CD.
One 20” x 30” Presentation Board for each project, with the following on each board:
- Project Title
- Project Statement (maximum 300 words; see item 3 above.)
- Assigned Entry Number placed on the upper left side of the Board
- Appropriate Images
- Name of your firm ON THE BACK OF THE BOARD
Each submission must be on a separate board. Firm names must not appear on the front of the presentation boards, only the assigned Entry Number. Submittals with firm identification on the front of the board will be disqualified.
Awards
Each project will be evaluated on its own individual merits, i.e., how it solves the design problem addressed including issues of sustainability.
Awards can be given in three categories: Honor Awards, Honor Citations, and Merit Awards. Honor awards will be given for overall design excellence. Honor Citations will be awarded to projects worthy of recognition because of design quality. Merit Awards will be granted at the discretion of the design jury.
These awards will be designated by a jury of architects whose work and reputations have been established at the highest level of the profession. The lead juror will present the awards at the 2009 Convention.
The Sambo Mockbee Membership Award will be selected by the membership at the 2009 Annual Convention.
Classification
The awards will be divided into general classifications as follows:
- Architecture/New Construction
- Renovation/Restoration
- Architectural Interiors
- Master Planning Urban Design
- Residential
- Unbuilt
Please designate the general classification under the entry number in the upper left hand corner of the presentation board and with the Title Slide.
